Underground Folklore of Britain and Ireland–Sacred Sites

A Folklore Society online talk, by

Joanne McFall

Tuesday 7 October 2025, 19:00-20:30

This talk will present and discuss six major sacred sites in Great Britain and Ireland. Many were created in Neolithic times, becoming vital sites in Celtic times and still utilised in the present day. The talk will explore important spirituality associated with groves, water, stones, pasture lands and settlements.

Some of the most important features of sacred sites in ancient Celtic folklore of Great Britain and Ireland will be considered, alongside sites from contrasting areas of landscape ranging from groves, hills and mounds to settlements, enclosures and ring forts. The talk will include aspects of Celtic folk and faery lore connected to each part. Sacred sites, such as caves, chambers and cairns associated with the Celtic underground will also be discussed.

Joanne McFall is a writer from south-east Ireland. She facilitates workshops and training programmes to national and international groups in the areas of arts, creative writing and literature.
