50 Years of Plant-Lore Collecting
A Folklore Society online talk by
Roy Vickery
Tuesday 23 September 2025
19:00-20:30 (BST)
In the 1970s, Roy Vickery, a professional botanist, became dissatisfied by the publications then available on the folklore of plants. All too often these regurgitated Victorian material, and there was an overriding implication that our ancestors were foolishly gullible. On realising that there was still a great deal of interesting material which could be collected, he has devoted much time to gather, and publish, this material. Approximately 140 publications, ranging from contributions to local newsletters to lengthy books, have resulted from this work. His Plant-lore Archive project contains approximately 9.400 items of information received from some 3,400 contributors.
Roy Vickery worked at The Natural History Museum from 1965-2007, and remains a Scientific Associate at the Museum; he has also served on the Folklore Society’s committee (including a spell as Honorary Secretary), the Society for Folk Life Studies council, as a vice-president of the Botanical Society of the British Isles, and as president of the South London Botanical Institute.
