Exhibition at The National Library of Scotland: Sgeul / Story : Folktales from the Scottish Highlands

— Posted on 13th February 2024

An exhibition on folklorist John Francis Campbell is currently on at The National Library of Scotland.

In 1859 Campbell and a team of helpers travelled across the western Highlands and Islands of Scotland, meeting storytellers and collecting Scottish Gaelic folktales. Until then, many of these folktales had been almost unknown beyond the Highlands.

The exhibition includes manuscript diaries kept by Campbell and watercolours he painted of the places he visited. Visitors can also read and listen to some of the collected folktales in both Gaelic and English.

Sgeul | Story is on at the National Library of Scotland until 20 April 2024.
