Charms, Charmers and Charming Third International Conference

  • 11th — 13th May 2007
  • Pécs, Hungary

The third international conference on ‘Charms, Charmers and Charming ‘ in Pécs, Hungary, 11-13 May 2007, of which the Folklore Society was a joint sponsor with the International Society for Folk Narrative Research, the Committee on Charms, Charmers and Charming, Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, University of Pécs, and the Hungarian Ethnographical Society, Budapest, was a great success.

It was planned by Éva Pócs and our own Jonathan Roper, both of whom gave papers; it was organized in Hungary by Éva Pócs with the assistance of her colleagues and students with enormous efficiency and care.

The conference was attended by several other members of the Folklore Society including the president, Will Ryan, the vice-president, Marion Bowman, and Lea Olsan (the last two also gave papers).

This truly international conference took place in a beautiful and palatial academic conference centre overlooking the very attractive and ancient town, in wonderful weather. The Folklore Society hosted a wine reception which turned out to be a degustation of five of the best wines from a fine local vineyard.

Needless to say the conference was a great social as well as academic event. Plans to publish a selection of the papers are already well advanced and a further conference on this topic is also planned.
