The Folklore Society Privacy Policy (updated May 2018)

On 25 May 2018, the law changed to give better data protection for everyone. This means that The Folklore Society has an obligation to process data in line with the new legislation:

  • Your personal data will be processed lawfully, in a clear, fair and transparent manner
  • Your data will only be collected for the purpose of providing you with our services to you as a member of the society, and for the legitimate business interest of communicating with you about matters relating to the society and its activities.
  • Your data will be processed securely during all stages and destroyed safely. You have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulations 2016, including:
  • The right to be informed about your data
  • The right to have your data rectified or deleted
  • The right to restrict or object to the processing of data

The Folklore Society is the Controller of your data, which are collected and processed by Taylor & Francis Group/Informa on our behalf; for Taylor & Francis Group’s privacy policy, visit: taylorandfrancis.com/customer-privacy/

Taylor & Francis Group, collect and process the following data about Folklore Society members: name, postal and email addresses, and telephone numbers (if supplied). Taylor & Francis/Informa also securely process bank details of members paying their subscriptions by Direct Debit. The Folklore Society does not store members’ bank details.

Electronic and paper lists of society members’ names and addresses are archived by The Folklore Society with an embargo of 30 years for public access. Individuals, with proof of ID, may request a copy of the data we store about them and/or request the amendment or removal of their data.

The Folklore Society shares the names and addresses of our current members with a trusted printing company who mail out our newsletter FLS News, and who delete the data immediately afterwards.

The Folklore Society’s email bulletin list requires an opt‐in via our website https://folklore-society.com and each email bulletin provides details on how to unsubscribe

The Folklore Society processes, with individuals’ explicit consent, some sensitive personal information from participants at our events in order to cater for specific dietary and mobility needs; the information is anonymized before sharing with third parties such as caterers. Personal data supplied when registering for our events are securely destroyed afterwards.

The Folklore Society will inform you in a timely manner if we have reason to believe that the security of your data has been breached

The Folklore Society will never share your personal data without your explicit consent with any third parties other than those whom we trust to securely process the personal data required to provide our services to members and participants at our events.
