A Brief History of Burial Grounds

A Folklore Society online talk by Helen Frisby

Burial grounds are so much more than simply a practical necessity. Not only do they embody our relationships with the dead, they speak to what it means to be human at all.

In this talk, Dr Helen Frisby, author of the Shire book Traditions of Death and Burial, will cover the history, law and lore of burial in England and Wales. From the earliest beginnings of humanity itself, through the Christian conversion period, Middle Ages and into industrial times, we’ll explore how have people in this country have expressed their relationships with their loved – and sometimes feared – dead through body disposal practices.

Dr Helen Frisby has taught history at the University of the West of England, Bristol, and funeral directing at the University of Bath where she’s also a Visiting Research Fellow. Helen is also Secretary of the Association for the Study of Death and Society, and a Council Member and Trustee of the Folklore Society. Helen has appeared on BBC Radio and The History Channel, and continues to research and publish on topics relating to death, funerals and bereavement, past and present.
