Art of Belonging: Sicilian Folk Art Practices Today

A Folklore Society online talk by Pina Santoro

Tuesday 11 April 2023, 18:00 BST

The Malocchio is a ritualistic cleansing practised throughout southern Italy. My creative practice and research has uncovered the present traditional practice, taking from a hidden secret and carrying it into today’s every day life of UK/Italian immigrant women.

As a woman growing up with a dual identity in the UK, it is through the awareness of Sicilian folk art practices, that I am able to feel a greater sense of belonging. Social practice also plays a major part in my methodology. Sharing my research in the UK and Italy, the work is enriched and becomes an honest reflection of societal issues.

Pina Santoro is a Doctoral Researcher, ALSS – Cambridge School of Art
