Dreaming Valleys 2: Finding our Place, Exploring Beyond the Maps.
A day of deep topography: Talks. Music. Film.
Saturday 3 June 2023, at the Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge
Northern Earth, The Bookcase and Architects of Harmonic Rooms have come together to present the second edition of Dreaming Valleys.
Dreaming Valleys showcases entanglements with place. At its most expansive, ‘place’ can be folded out to include places labelled rural, urban, suburban, abandoned, industrial, spectral, occulted; and it can be folded back in on itself, the labels neatly stacked, forming layers at a single point. Fascination with place attracts practices such as walking, collecting, mapping and myriad ways of recording, documenting. It’s a realm of activity that resembles a search, a gathering of evidence; fragments, scraps that mean something. Often these solitary interrogations become collaborations with others, with people, objects, artefacts, libraries, book collections and with the ‘place’ itself. We become entangled with place, it passes through us as surely as we pass through it. What does it mean to collaborate with a place? Has a place ever entered your dreams? Harry Wheeler, one of the symposium organisers, pointed out that our title Dreaming Valleys seems to suggest it’s the valleys that are dreaming.
